In the world of elite netball, few records are as awe-inspiring as Romelda Aiken-George's remarkable achievement of 255 games played. This milestone, achieved in her 19th year of professional play, is a testament to her unwavering dedication and skill. But what makes this feat even more extraordinary is the context in which it occurred. As the NSW Swifts overwhelmed the West Coast Fever in a clinical six-point victory, Aiken-George's record-breaking performance was overshadowed, highlighting the competitive nature of the sport. Personally, I find it fascinating that in a sport where every second counts and every goal matters, Aiken-George's longevity and consistency have set a new standard. This raises a deeper question: what does it take to sustain a career at the top level for so long, and what does it say about the resilience and determination of athletes like her? In my opinion, this achievement is not just about the numbers; it's about the impact she has had on the sport and the inspiration she has provided to a new generation of players. The Swifts' victory, while impressive, serves as a reminder that in netball, as in life, records are meant to be broken. The game was a shootout between two towering post shooters, with Grace Nweke's incredible athleticism on display in the Swifts circle. With international superstar Helen Housby still out with a spinal fracture, rising star Grace Whyte's connection with Nweke continued to flourish. The Swifts' brand of possession netball saw them progress to the post at a strong 85 percent centre pass conversion rate. Coach Briony Akle paid tribute to her team's work ethic, saying, 'It's that dedication to doing the little things much better. It all comes back to training like you want to play, and for a few weeks there we went away from that.' The recent lift in form by the Swifts has seen them climb to fifth on the ladder as they make a late charge at finals. Fever's second loss in a row, and a horror run of away games at the end of the season, leaves them teetering dangerously on the edge of being bumped out of third and potentially even the finals. The Adelaide Thunderbirds have jumped back to the top of the ladder, courtesy of their 55 to 51 victory over the Melbourne Mavericks. The Mavericks surged back in the final quarter, but some clutch defence from MVP Latanya Wilson saw the Thunderbirds finish four point winners. It was physical from the first whistle, with multiple bodies hitting the floor from both teams. The strong defensive pressure across the board forced a range of sloppy errors. Luckily for the home side, their superior centre pass conversion gave them a narrow three goal lead at quarter time. The Melbourne Mavericks are on the edge of their first finals appearance in their three year history. Currently sitting fourth on the ladder, they are one game clear of the Sunshine Coast Lightning. With a run home that consists of games against Lightning, Fever, Vixens and Firebirds they will likely be relying on some results falling their way to get to finals. With the 2026/2027 Diamonds Squad Announcement imminent, players are needing to put their best foot forward to secure their place in the highly competitive environment. Players like Georgie Horjus, Matilda Garrett and Jamie-Lee Price have all but secured their spots; however, will someone like Amy Parmenter be able to retain her position? And will someone like Lauren Frew or Jessie Grenvold get an invite to the wider squad for the first time?
