In a groundbreaking revelation, a five-year study conducted by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) in collaboration with the University of Jos has unveiled a potential game-changer for Nigeria's energy landscape. The findings, presented at a seminar, suggest the presence of oil and natural gas deposits in Plateau State, opening up new possibilities for hydrocarbon exploration in the country's Middle Belt region.
Unlocking the Potential of Plateau
The study, led by Professor Nuhu Kadai Samaila, a renowned expert in sedimentology and petroleum geology, has confirmed geological indicators favorable for hydrocarbon generation. Prof. Samaila's declaration, "There is oil in Plateau," has sparked excitement and curiosity. The research focused on the Shendam Sheet 212 area, revealing thick sediments and temperature gradients that could mature source rocks within the basin.
One of the key takeaways is the potential for natural gas. Laboratory analysis indicated appreciable organic carbon content in rock samples, with sediment thickness exceeding 500 meters in certain locations. Despite some weathering and erosion, the researchers found evidence of hydrocarbon movement beneath the surface.
